About the name
Duarte is the Portuguese Edward — Old English ead, wealth, and weard, guardian, routed through Spanish Eduarte and worn down to something that no longer sounds English at all. It arrived with the marriage of João I to Philippa of Lancaster, whose son Duarte took the throne in 1433 and is remembered as the Philosopher King.
That is an unusually traceable journey for a name: an English royal name, imported by an English princess, naturalised so thoroughly that Portuguese speakers now hear it as entirely their own.
Three syllables, said doo-AR-teh. Duda is the standard affectionate form. On our vibe map it is Heirloom, with Cultural Fusion held behind a real aesthetic primary.
