The everyday tongue of the ancient Near East

Aramaic was the working language from Egypt to the Indus for the better part of a millennium, and it is the language Jesus is thought to have spoken. English received its names at two removes, through Greek scripture and then Latin: Thomas from te'oma, twin; Martha from marta, lady; Bartholomew and Tabitha alongside them. Small dialect communities still speak it today.
