Ararat, the alphabet, and a very long memory
Armenian names belong to one of the oldest continuous Christian naming traditions, written in an alphabet designed for the language in 405 AD. The Iranian-rooted vard (rose) runs through Vardan, Sirvard and Vardanush, while Anahit and Ara reach back before Christianity. Many names commemorate saints, mountains or the Ararat plain, and the diaspora has carried them into French, Russian and American usage largely unchanged.
