Snow, forest, and the long light

Finnish is unrelated to the Indo-European languages that surround it, which is why its names look and sound like nothing else in Europe. Many come straight from the natural world — Lumi (snow), Suvi (summer), Aamu (morning), Ilta (evening). Stress is always on the first syllable, vowels are pure and doubled letters are genuinely held twice, so the names read far more easily than their spelling suggests.
