Your baby's Kua number

Kua (卦) is a single number, 1 through 9 (skipping 5), assigned to each person based on birth date and gender. It maps to one of eight trigrams from the I Ching, and through them, to eight directions — four that support your baby and four to avoid for sleep. This is the foundation of the Eight Mansions (八宅) school of feng shui.

Babies born before February 4th are traditionally assigned to the previous lunar year — the calculator handles that adjustment automatically. Birth date is processed in your browser only and is never saved.

How it works

The classic formula sums the last two digits of the lunar birth year, reduces to a single digit, and then offsets by gender:

  • Boys: Kua = 10 − (digital root of last two digits of year)
  • Girls:Kua = 5 + (digital root of last two digits of year), reduced again if > 9
  • Result of 5has no direction (it's the center palace) — boys default to 2, girls default to 8.
  • Lunar year: babies born before February 4 are traditionally assigned to the previous year (Start of Spring, 立春). The calculator handles this automatically.

East Group vs West Group

Kua numbers split into two clusters that share the same auspicious directions. Most family-room planning starts here:

East Group (东四命)

Kua 1 · 3 · 4 · 9

Auspicious: North · East · Southeast · South

Babies whose Kua falls in this group thrive in rooms where the crib head can point east or south. Light, sunrise-facing nurseries are naturally aligned.

West Group (西四命)

Kua 2 · 6 · 7 · 8

Auspicious: West · Northwest · Southwest · Northeast

Babies in this group are best supported in rooms facing west or northwest. Sunset-facing nurseries with warmer evening light naturally suit them.

What to do with your result

The Kua number is the starting point. The next steps are the room itself — where to place the crib, what to avoid hanging on walls, which corners to keep quiet:
